- History: "Stars and Stripes Forever!" is Considered the greatest work of composer John Phillip Sousa. It was named the official National March of the United States by Congress in 1987. Sousa was on an ocean liner returning home from a European vacation with his wife when he wrote his famed song on Christmas Day in 1896. The song was first performed on May 14th, 1897 at Willow Grove Park just outside of Philadelphia. The words are not as well known as the song itself, and many orchestras are known to play the tune. Soccer fans around the world are found singing various lyrics to the chorus.
