History: Tropical flowers are popular because of their amazing fragrance and breathtaking beauty. Native to South Africa, the Bird of Paradise is named for its resemblance to the actual bird. It is the Official Flower of Los Angeles. The Royal Poinciana is mainly found in the dry forests of Madagascar. Generally reaching a height of fifteen feet, the flower is grown in South Florida to provide shade during the early summer months. The Gloriosa Lily is native to Southern Africa and Asia. Due to their contents of alkaloids, the flower can be very toxic if ingested. Originating in East Asia, the Chinese Hibiscus is edible and enjoyed in salads.
