History: Originating in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th and 16th centuries, ballet took off shortly after in France with the help of aristocrat Catherine de' Medici. It wasn't until the early 20th century when Russian-born George Balanchine created the first professional ballet company in the United States. The popularity grew in America when Balanchine produced interpretations of Shakespeare's dramas, such as Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Since then, ballet has included more modern music, and the dancers are required to trend more towards acting on top of being expert dancers.
