History: Also known as downhill skiing, alpine skiing is a winter sport which can be traced back to prehistoric times. Various sizes and shapes of wooden planks have been found in Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway dating as far back as 8000-7000 BC. In the 1850's, Norwegian Sondre Norheim is credited with popularizing skis with curved sides and bindings capable of making slalom turns. By the late 1800's, the sport had gained popularity in most of Europe and the Unted States, and in 1922, the first slalom competition took place in Murren, Switzerland. Alpine skiing in the Olympics debuted in 1936, and today it is one of the most watched sports at the Winter Games.
