History: Located on the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland, Washington, D.C. has been the capitol of the United States since shortly after the signing of the Residence Act in 1790. The Residence Act settled the question of where the federal government would be located. At the time, they were located in New York City, although they were previously in Philadelphia, Annapolis, as well as several other locations. The city was named to honor the first President, George Washington, and was officially established in 1791. Today, the centers of the three branches of the federal government are located in Washington. They including the White House, which is home to the President, the U.S. Capitol Building, home to Congress, along with many national monuments, museums, and memorials.
