History: This stamp sheet celebrates hot air balloons. Two of the stamps on this sheet depict generic balloons, while the other two stamps depict historically significant balloons. One is the Intrepid, a balloon used by the Union Army during the Civil War, which played a significant role in the Battle of Fair Oaks. The other is the Explorer II, which was launched in 1935 and reached a height of 72,395 feet, twice as high as the typical cruising altitude of modern jet planes, a record altitude at the time.
