History: The Florida Everglades are a region of tropical wetlands located in the southern portion of the state. The region is shaped by water and fire. The Wetlands experience frequent flooding in the wet season and drought in the dry season. The droughts increase the chances of fire. A majority of fires are caused by lightning strikes, and is an important element to the natural maintenance of the Everglades. This area is home to a vast array of plants and animals. Along with birds such as the Wood Stork, Ibises, Roseate Spoonbill, and Herons, the Everglades are best known for the American alligator and crocodile.
