During this time the automobile industry employed nearly 1 in 6 Americans. New industries developed as a result of America's automobile boom, such as the drive-in movie theater and the "drive-thru" at fast food establishments. This decade also saw a massive expansion in the U.S. Highway system when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the Federal Highway Act of 1956. Featured on this sheet are 5 automobiles that were very popular in the 1950's and can be considered icons of the automobile culture at the time.
