History: This Black Heritage Series stamp sheet features the portrait of American civil rights activist Roy Wilkins (August 30, 1901 - September 8, 1981). Wilkins was best known for his leadership of the NAACP. He became executive director in 1964. In 1967, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson. During his time, the NAACP played a critical role leading the nation into the Civil Rights movement. Often referred to as "Senior Statesmen" of the U.S. Civil Rights movement, Wilkins was also one of the key leaders in organizing the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous speech.
