• History: The Italian painter Paolo de Matteis painted The Adoration of the Shepherds in 1712. It is now part of the collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The Madonna & Child on this stamp, issued on November 1, 1996, is taken from de Matteis' larger painting.
