• History: This Literary Arts stamp sheet features the portrait of American poet and educator Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Born in Portland, Maine, which was then part of Massachusetts, Longfellow studied at Bowdoin College.  Longfellow spent time in Europe before returning to become a professor at Bowdoin, and then later at Harvard College.  Longfellow wrote mostly poems known for the musicality, and he became the most popular American poet of his time.  He was so popular, that his 70th birthday almost became a national holiday with parades, speeches and readings of his poetry.
