History: Country music is a genre of American popular music which originated in the Southern U.S. rural regions. It takes its roots from American folk and Western music. This sheet of stamps depicts some popular singers of Country & Western music from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953) , a singer-songwriter, had 11 number one songs between 1948 and 1953 including “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart”. Patsy Cline (September 8, 1932 - March 5, 1963), a singer-songwriter with a rich, emotionally expressive and bold contralto voice had hits such as “I Fall to Pieces” and “Crazy”, both in 1961. The Carter Family who recorded “Can the Circle Be Unbroken” and “Keep on the Sunny Side” had a profound impact on the U.S. folk revival of the 1960’s. Bob Wills (March 6, 1905 - May 13, 1975), the “King of Western Swing”, played his fiddle into popularity with songs such as “Ida Red Likes the Boogie” and “Faded Love”, his last hits of the 1950’s.
