• History: America boasts a history full of popular singers. Included on this sheet of stamps are Al Jolson (May 26, 1886 - October 23, 1950) a singer, actor and comedian who, at the peak of his career, was dubbed “The World’s Greatest Entertainer”. Bing Crosby (May 3, 1903 - October 14, 1977), a singer and actor, inspired American GI’s and raised their morale during WWII. He was declared the “most admired man alive” in 1948. Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 - September 1, 1977) was an African-American blues, jazz and gospel vocalist and actress. Although she began in the 1920’s singing blues, she frequently performed jazz, big band and pop music on Broadway. Nat “King” Cole (March 17, 1919 - February 15, 1965), a singer and musician, was known best as a leading jazz pianist. He was widely noted for his soft, baritone voice and performances in big bands and jazz genres. Finally, Ethel Merman (January 16, 1908 - February 15, 1984) was an actress and singer, primarily known for her belting voice and roles in musical theatre. She has been called “the undisputed First Lady of the musical comedy stage”.
