History: William Faulkner (1897-1962) is considered one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century. He is the author of many beloved novels, notably including The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949. Faulkner's inclusion on a stamp is also noteworthy as he himself once served as the postmaster for the University of Mississippi. In 1924, he resigned from the Postal Service with the following letter:
As long as I live under the capitalistic system, I expect to have my life influenced by the demands of moneyed people. But I will be damned if I propose to be at the beck and call of every itinerant scoundrel who has two cents to invest in a postage stamp.
This, sir, is my resignation.
