History: Known for playing the tough guy in movies such as Taxi, Public Enemy, and White Heat, James Cagney (July 17, 1899 - March 30, 1986) is widely thought of as one of the greatest actors of all time. Growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Cagney got his first acting job in the chorus of the wartime play, Every Sailor. By 1931, he got a starring role in Public Enemy, which turned out to be one of the most influential gangster movies of the period. Cagney was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Male Actor, and won in 1942 for the film Yankee Doodle Dandy. In 1974, he received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award where Charlton Heston called him "...one of the most significant figures of a generation when American film was dominant." Cagney retired in 1961 from acting. In 1984 he made a rare TV appearance in the movie Terrible Joe Moran. It was his last role.
