History: In June of 1948 during the Cold War, the Soviet Union blocked off the railways, roads, and canals to the sections of Berlin that were under Western allied control. In order to deliver supplies and food to the people of West Berlin, crews from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa flew over 4,700 tons of supplies everyday. Within a year, the Soviet Union realized their attempt to control the entire city was unsuccessful, and lifted the blockade. The city remained divided for the next 41 years into two cities. The West, which was a democratic state, and the East, which was the Soviet run communist state. In 1989, the Berlin Wall was torn down, and the city was re-unified.
