History: Known as the originator of the mobile sculpture, Alexander Calder (July 22, 1898 - November 11, 1976) was the grandson of a Scottish sculptor whose most famous piece is the statue of William Penn on top of Philadelphia's City Hall. After studying engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, Calder spent several years on different engineering jobs before he decided to become an artist. His first major task as an artist was a pair of mobiles he created for the new theater at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. His most prolific works included painting a full-size jet liner, painting the first vehicle in the BMW Art Car Project, as well as his designs for over 1,800 pieces of jewelry he created for friends and family.
