History: On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright became the first to sustain a heavier than air human flight. In the days leading up to this event, the brothers attempted several flights, but minor crashes and a broken propeller shaft delayed the historical flight. The brothers each flew the Flyer 1 two times, with Wilbur traveling almost 900 feet in just under a minute on the last attempt of the day. While bringing Flyer 1 back after the last flight, a strong gust of wind flipped the plane, damaging it beyond repair. Years later, after much dispute, the plane was brought to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, where it is still on display today.
