History: During the colonial era, only the wealthy could afford a clock due to the fact they were mostly imported from England and France. In the early 1800's, clockmakers in America started to make clocks using simple hand tools, and with the help of cabinetmakers, started to create beautiful pieces known as grandfathers clocks. Shortly thereafter, a clockmaker named Simon Willard developed the "banjo clock," which unlike many others, did not have the striking mechanism, but rather kept time by only its hands and dial. These banjo clocks feature a cast iron eagle on the top of most designs, and there are only 4,000 Willard banjo clocks known worldwide.
