  • History: Modern architecture often refers to buildings designed in the early 20th century.  Focusing more on function, rather than imitating nature, this Modern American Architecture stamp sheet shows some of America's most well-known buildings.  The Guggenheim Museum in New York, New York was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1943.  Also located in New York City is the Chrysler Building, which was designed in 1928 by William Van Alen.  Designed in 1959, the Vanna Venturi House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was designed by Robert Venturi for his mother Vanna.  Located at JKF Airport in New York City, The TWA airport was designed by Eero Saarinen in 1962.  The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in October of 2003.  Along the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, the apartments taking up 860-880 Lake Shore Drive was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1921.  Established in 1937, Washington DC's National Gallery of Art was designed by M. Pei and John Russell Pope.  Built in 1949, the Glass house of New Canaan, CT, was designed by Phillip Johnson.  Also known as Rudolph Hall, the Yale Art and Architecture Building was designed by Paul Rudolph and was completed in 1963.  Located in Atlanta, Georgia, the High Museum of Art opened in 1983 and was designed by Richard Meier.  The Phillips Exeter Academy Library was designed by Louis Kahn in 1965.  Chicago's John Hancock Center in Chicago, Illinois, was designed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill in 1965.
