The Sacagawea Native American Dollar was authorized to be redesigned in the Native American $1 Coin Act, passed in 2007. The act called for the one dollar coin to be redesigned to depict "images celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the development of the United States..." The redesigned Native American Dollars kept the obverse design largely intact, although the date and inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM were moved to the edge of the coin.
The theme of the 2023 Native American $1 Coin is: Maria Tallchief and American Indians in Ballet.
Maria Tallchief is considered America’s first major prima ballerina. She is the first Native American (Osage Nation) to hold the rank. In addition to Tallchief, four other American Indian ballerinas from Oklahoma achieved international recognition in the 20th century, including her younger sister Marjorie Tallchief, Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, and Moscelyne Larkin. Celebrated as the “Five Moons,” their legacy of achievement and inclusion continues to influence ballet today.
These 2023 P & D Native American Sacagawea Dollars are of great worth to the collector or numismatist that needs to fill a hole in their BU Native American Dollar set. The Sacagawea Dollar weighs 8.1 grams and has a diameter of 26.5mm. Native American Dollars are composed of a pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass (.770 copper, .120 zinc, .070 manganese, and .040 nickel).
