The Sacagawea Native American Dollar was authorized to be redesigned in the Native American $1 Coin Act, passed in 2007.  The act called for the one dollar coin to be redesigned to depict "images celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the development of the United States..."  The redesigned Native American Dollars kept the obverse design largely intact, although the date and inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM were moved to the edge of the coin.

The 2019 Native American Dollar honors Mary Golda Ross, the first known Naative American female engineer. Mary was also the first female engineer to work for Lockheed. She was one of forty engineers to start on the Skunk Works project at Lockeed, a renowned and highly secretive project that worked on advanced aircraft designs and rockets. She is best known for her work on the Atlas-Agena Rocket program.

The reverse design depicts Mary Golda Ross writing calculations. Behind her, an Atlas-Agena rocket launches into space, with an equation inscribed in its cloud. An astronaut, symbolic of Native American astronauts, including John Herrington, spacewalks above. In the field behind, a group of stars indicates outer space. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "$1." Mint Artistic Infusion Program designer Emily Damstra created the design, which Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna sculpted.

These 2019 P & D Native American Sacagawea Dollars are of great worth to the collector or numismatist that needs to fill a hole in their BU Sacagawea Dollar set.  The Sacagawea Dollar weighs 8.1 grams and has a diameter of 26.5mm.  Sacagawea Dollars are composed of a pure copper core with outer layers of manganese brass (.770 copper, .120 zinc, .070 manganese, and .040 nickel).
