History: Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955) was an African-American civil rights activist and educator. She founded a school for African-Americans in Daytona Beach, Florida, that is today known as Bethune-Cookman University. She also served as an unofficial advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his "Black Cabinet."
