- History: This stamp sheet celebrates four Americans who were pioneering leaders of invention and industry. Charles Steinmetz (1965-1923) is best known as one of the forefathers of electric engineering, having performed pioneering research into the theory of alternating current. Edwin Armstrong (1890-1954) was also an electrical engineer, making his mark on the world of communication by developing FM radio. Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), originally from Serbia, helped develop alternating current, and did groundbreaking research in the fields of wireless communication and wireless power distribution well ahead of his time. Philo T. Farnsworth (1906-1971) was an inventor whose work contributed to the development of the television.
