• History: Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was an English religious philosophy, scientist, and polymath. In addition to his theology, Priestley is noted for his scientific accomplishments, most notably the discovery of oxygen. Political tension in England led to his condemnation, forcing him to flee to the United States in 1791. He spent the rest of his life in Pennsylvania, where he passed away thirteen years later. This stamp sheet commemorates Priestley's 250th birthday.
