- History: Ernest Miller Hemmingway (1899-1961) is considered to be one of the most influential American authors of the 20th century. He is the writer of such novels as A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and The Sea. Hemmingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He was famous for his short and simple prose. William Faulkner once remarked, “He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.” Hemmingway responded, “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?”
