History: South Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, after having been acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The territory experienced a population boom after gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874, which led to the violent displacement and exile of the native Sioux people. South Dakota was the site of the infamous massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890, in which the U.S. Army murdered scores of men, women, and children of the Lakota Sioux Nation. Despite its bloody history, South Dakota is known best today for its impressive monuments and natural wonders, including Mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park. Despite being one of the larger states geographically, South Dakota is one of the least populous states. This stamp sheet commemorates the 100th anniversary of South Dakota statehood.
