History: The 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta were held on the centennial of the first modern Olympic Games. Atlanta narrowly beat out Athens in its bid to be the host city. 1996 was the first year in which the Summer Games and Winter Games were held in different years. The competition was marred by a failed bombing attempt on the Centennial Olympic Park. The bomb was discovered by security guard Richard Jewell before it exploded. This stamp sheet highlights some of the sports that were featured in Atlanta.
