History: Benjamin O. Davis Sr. (1877-1970) was the first African-American to reach the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Army. General Davis was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Bronze Star for his service in World War II. His son, Benjamin O. Davis Jr., was the commander of the Tuskeegee Airman and later became a four-star general.
