History: This stamp, jointly issued by the United States and Israel in 1996, celebrates the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also called the Festival of Lights. In ancient times, a Jewish army led by a group called the Maccabees succeeded in retaking Judea from its Greek rulers. When the Maccabees recaptured the Temple in Jerusalem, they were astounded to discover that the oil to relight the menorah, which should have only lasted for one day, miraculously lasted for eight. Hanukkah is the festive celebration and commemoration of this miracle.
