The Sacagawea Native American Dollar was authorized to be redesigned in the Native American $1 Coin Act, passed in 2007. The act called for the one dollar coin to be redesigned to depict "images celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the development of the United States..." The redesigned Native American Dollars kept the obverse design largely intact, although the date and inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM were moved to the edge of the coin.
The 2016 issue commemorates the "Code Talkers" of World War I and World War II. It is estimated that more than 12,000 Native Americans served in the U.S. Military during World War I and more than 44,000 served during World War II. In both wars, Native Americans played a key role in creating secret codes based on their native tongues which were used to communicate troop movements and enemy positions to the U.S. troops. Many American lives were spared due to their crucial role in the two wars. The reverse of the Native American Dollar features 2 military helmets. One in the style used during WWI and the other in the style used during WWII. Behind the helmets are two feathers in a "V" symbolizing the victory, unity and importance that Native Americans played in the wars.
