• History:  James Dean  (February 8, 1931 - September 30, 1955) was an American actor.  Dean is probably most famous for his film Rebel Without a Cause (1955).  Dean portrayed restless young men in his films and became a symbol for rebellious youth.  Dean died prematurely in a car crash right at the height of his career.  He became the first actor to receive a posthumous Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in East of Eden (1955).  Dean also received a posthumous Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in Giant (1956).
