History: Four days prior to the 100th Boston Marathon, on April 11, 1996, the USPS Marathon stamp was issued at a ceremony in Copley Square, near the race’s finish line. The stamp was issued to celebrate Marathons. The Marathon has its origins in ancient Greece, where in 490 B.C. a military messenger named Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens, about 23 miles, to deliver news of a military victory against the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. The stamp features a contemporary design depicting a fleet-footed figure that alludes to the legend of the Greek god Hermes, the fastest mythological character.
