History: This stamp was issued to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Smithsonian Institution (August 10, 1846 - August 10, 1996). British scientist James Smithson (June 5, 1765 - May 27, 1829) passed his estate along "to the United States of America, to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase & diffusion of knowledge among men". On August 10, 1846, President James K. Polk signed the legislation that established the Smithsonian Institution. The Institution is a group of museums and research centers administered by the United States government. This stamp features a painting of "The Castle". It is the Institution's first building and is still used as the Smithsonian's headquarters. "The Castle" can be found near the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
