History: "Buffalo Soldiers" was originally the nickname given to members of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army by the Native Americans who fought them. The 10th Cavalry was an all African-American regiment. The 10th Cavalry was formed on September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It is said there are three possible reasons the nickname came about: 1) The curly hair of the soldiers reminded them of buffalo. 2) The soldier's fierce, brave nature reminded them of how buffaloes fight. 3) The soldiers wore thick coats made from buffalo in the winter. The nickname stuck and ultimately became synonymous with all of the all-black regiments formed in 1866. The "Buffalo Soldiers" were the first peacetime all-black regiments in the US Army. (There were all-black regiments as part of the Union Army during the Civil War.)
