  • History: Dr. Allison Davis (October 14, 1902 - November 21, 1983) devoted his life's work to recognizing and correcting unfair bias in the US educational system. His goal was to provide equal opportunity for all.  Davis went to, then segregated, Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. where he graduated valedictorian. He went on to Williams College in Massachusetts where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 and graduated summa cum laude.  Davis earned his master's degree in English from Harvard  in 1925. Following Harvard, Davis taught English to rural black children in Virginia.  This experience inspired him to take action regarding the state of bias in the educational system. Davis went back to Harvard to study social anthropology.  While working towards his second master's degree he started an anthropological investigation into the deep south. He earned his second master's degree from Harvard in 1932.  He went on to teach anthropology at Dillard University in New Orleans from 1935 through 1939.  Davis continued his research and penned two groundbreaking books: "Children of Bondage" (1940) and "Deep South: A Social Anthropological Study of Caste and Class" (1941).  Davis was the first African-American to hold a full faculty position at a major white university.  He joined the staff at the University of Chicago in 1942 after earning his Ph.D. in anthropology there.  He was granted tenure in 1948.   Davis retired from teaching at the University of Chicago in 1978 at the age of 76.  He then devoted himself to his final book "Leadership, Love, and Aggression", published in November, 1983.  Less than a month later he died after unsuccessful heart surgery.  Davis published a total of 10 books.  His ideas spurred great improvements in early childhood developmental programs which lead to Head Start and the use of unbiased standardized testing.
