- History: Since the 18th century, glass making has been a major form of art in America. Free-blowing glass is a technique that has been around since the middle of the 1st century. Free-blown glass uses a blowpipe where the glassblower uses short puffs to form the glass into its desired shape. Late in the 1st century, glassblowers formed molds out of wood and metal. A glob of molten glass was placed inside the mold, and required less skill of the glassworker to form the shape of the glass. In 1825, American inventor, John P. Bakewell, patented the pressed glass technique to make knobs for furniture. He would use a plunger to press the molten glass into the mold. Recently, art glass has become very popular among amateurs. Art glass is generally made for decoration, and many times consists of glass that is placed in a kiln to mold the glass into shape.
