History: During World War II, the Germans became the first to take steps to put a man-made object into space. On May 10, 1946, the US launched the first scientific exploration, and a few months later, the first images of earth were taken from space. In 1961, the Russians sent cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on the first successful human spaceflight. On July 21th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to step foot on the moon. Today, Mars is the focus of space exploration. NASA is investigating Mars for evidence of ancient life, and researching if the planet would be suitable for human life in the future.
