History: In 1896, when word that gold had been discovered in the Klondike region of the Yukon in north-western Canada, a stampede of prospectors from Seattle and San Francisco made their way to the area. Of the 100,000 that attempted the journey, only about 30,000 to 40,000 made it. In order to avoid starvation, the prospectors were required to bring a year's worth of food with them. The majority of these prospectors who made the long journey did not strike gold, with very few becoming rich. By 1899, there was no more gold, and with the discovery of gold in Nome, Alaska, the Klondike Gold Rush was over.
