History: In 1898, the United States issued a set of nine commemorative stamps to honor the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition which was a world's fair held in Omaha, Nebraska. This was only the second set of commemorative stamps ever issued. Originally, the plan was for 7 stamps ranging from 1 cent to 1 dollar, with each containing a different design. Later in the process, two more stamps were added, including the $2 issue. The goal of the fair was to show the development of the West, from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. From June 1st to November 1st, over 2.6 million people came to see the more than 4,000 exhibits.
