History: Born as Sarah Breedlove in Delta Louisiana, Madam CJ Walker (December 23, 1867 - May 25, 1919) is known for being the first self-made female millionaire. Like many women of that generation, a poor diet and hygiene mixed with harsh products found in soaps, Walker experienced hair loss. Learning from her brothers that owned a barber shop, she started the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, and developed a line of beauty and hair products for African-American women. By the time she died in 1919 of high blood pressure, she had paved the way for future female entrepreneurs, and proved that with hard work and dedication anyone can accomplish their dreams.
