History: In the history of the United States Military, relatively few women have fought alongside men. As far back as the Civil War, women cross dressed as men in order to fight. In 1917, a woman named Loretta Walsh became the first woman to enlist in the United States Military. It was not until 1948 congress passed a law was allowing women the right to enlist. 1976 women were finally admitted into the United States military academy, and now about 16% of the graduates at West Point are women. Since 2013, women have been allowed to be assigned to units tasked with direct combat. Today, women are able to serve in 95 percent of all Army positions.
