• History: Officially beginning in 1868, cycling as a sport started with a 1,200 meter race in Saint-Cloud Park near Paris, France.  Within a few years, the sport took off in Europe and the United States.  While most countries used road races that went city-city, England focused more on time trials and tracks due to the poor road conditions of the country.  Today, major races are held around the world. The most famous, Tour de France, has a prize purse of more than $2.5 million.
