History: Valley Forge in Pennsylvania, was the camp of the American Continental Army during the winter of 1777-1778. It is located twenty miles northwest of Philadelphia. Starvation, disease, malnutrition, and exposure killed almost 2,500 soldiers by the end of February, 1778. While morale was low, Washington looked for help in training his troops for the upcoming spring. Recently arriving from Europe, Prussian drill master Baron Friedrich von Steuben took on the task of there training, improving their battle and formation techniques. By the end of winter, Washington's troops were well trained and in much higher spirits.
