- History: On the night of December 25-26, 1776, George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River to lead a surprise attack on the British troops in Trenton, New Jersey. Washington would not be deterred from surprising the British troops even though previous missions had failed. On January 2, 1777 Washington's forces, despite British reinforcements from Lord Cornwallis, defeated the British and forced them to retreat to their winter quarters in Morristown, New Jersey.
