History: On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress announced that the thirteen colonies were no longer part of the British empire. Originally drafted by Thomas Jefferson at the request of John Adams, the Declaration justified the independence by listing grievances against King George III. Although Congress voted to declare Independence on July 2nd, they ratified the text on July 4th, which is now known as the birthday of the United States of America.
