History: In the early 1800's, a British chemist named Luke Howard created a system using Latin names to classify different clouds. The three most common were cirrus, meaning curl of hair, stratus, meaning layer, and cumulus, meaning heap. Years later, scientists added the terms humulis, meaning small, and incus, meaning anvil, to designate other cloud characteristics. Along with these properties, the prefixes "cirro" and "alto" describe the clouds altitude. This stamp sheet shows the different cloudscapes and gives their scientific names.
