History: James Baldwin (August 2, 1924 - December 1, 1987) was an American writer best known for his role in the Civil Rights Movement, as well as his writings on race relations and love. In 1953, Baldwin's first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain was published. This semi-autobiographical novel was about the repression and hypocrisy of the Christian Church and its effect on African-American society. In 1957, after being deeply moved by the image of a young girl attempting to desegregate schools in North Carolina, Baldwin traveled to the south to write about what was happening there. Only a few short years latter, he became a popular spokesperson for the Civil Rights Movement. May 17, 1963 He was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Baldwin created a legacy that is still seen today.
