History: In May of 1804, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Captain Meriwether Lewis (August 18, 1774 - October 12, 1809), and his close friend Second Lieutenant William Clark (August 1, 1770 - September 1, 1838) of the U.S. Army to lead an exploration of the newly acquired territory west of the Mississippi. Along with mapping the area, they were to find a route across the western part of the continent, and establish an American presence before any other powers could claim the territory. Although they were not given much acclaim for their accomplishments for more than a century, Lewis and Clark are now known as one of the most famous expedition leaders in United States History.
