  • History: This American Choreographers stamp sheet represents four of the most recognized American choreographers. A dancer for more than seventy years, Martha Graham (May 11, 1894 - April 1, 1991) was the first dancer to ever perform at the White House.  She is often thought of as the Picasso of modern dance.  Considered to have popularized modern dance, especially among African Americans, Alvin Ailey (January 5, 1931 - December 1, 1989) toured around the world, resulting in his company being nicknamed the "Cultural Ambassador to the World."  In 1988, he received the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP, as well as the Kennedy Center Honors.  Agnes De Mille (September 18, 1905 - October 7, 1993) used her love for acting to influence her choreography.  Rather than focusing on the dancer's technique, she used the agony and distress in her dances.  Known as the father of American Ballet, George Balanchine (January 2, 1904 - April 30, 1983) co-founded the New York City Ballet where he was the ballet-master for more than 35 years.
